Traditional Mexican clay pottery traces its roots back to the ancient Olmec culture, with the techniques used today often little changed from centuries past.

From the Olmecs to the Teotihuacans to the Aztecs, each culture lent their own distinct styles and designs to the pottery they created.

The arrival of the Spanish colonialists added European and Arabic influences to the styles and colors of the native pieces.

Talavera Pottery

Introduced to Mexico by Spanish colonial artisans, Talavera is named after the sixteenth century pottery center of Talavera de la Reina.

The arrival of Spanish conquistadors resulted in the fusion of pre-columbian Mexican pottery with Spanish and Arab influences, resulting in the beautiful Talavera pottery we see today.

Authentic Talavera pottery is hand-crafted from three types of clay and then fired at extreme heat.

The pieces are painted with color combinations drawn from only six basic hues and subsequently glazed. The entire process ends with the creation of pieces of great beauty, characterized by their dazzling colors.
